Stunning "Pop The Top" Home Addition Project
Who doesn’t love a great before and after of a second story addition? We know we do.
This adorable home had endured some serious water damage and passed from quite a few owners before it found its way into our lives.
We had been specifically searching in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood of St. Paul for awhile.
Known for its treelined streets, walkability, beautiful parks, homes with lots of charm and character, and overall friendly neighborhood vibe, it is the epitome of an ideal neighborhood.
The original home was a classic one and a half story cape cod with symmetry and adorable dentil molding on the exterior.
The tiny 800 square foot interior had already been gutted down to the studs and much of the structure had severe rot that needed to be addressed.
As you can see in the before pictures below, there were some major issues to fix!
Going into this project we knew the existing layout would be much too small for a modern family’s needs, and that is how an addition came into this home’s future.
Keeping a similar feel to the original look of the home but updating the space to be more functional were our top priorities.
We wanted to respect the unique qualities of this neighborhood with our design.
We think we were able to accomplish our goal successfully by adding an addition in the back, removing the roof and rebuilding the structure from the foundation up while adding a full second story.
In the end, we transformed this home from 800 square feet to 2,200 square feet, and created a home to meet the wants and needs of buyers in our market.
